April 2010~ Hands On Dentistry Clinic

Saturday April 3rd the HSVMA teamed up again with Northwest Equine Stewardship Center in Monroe, Washington to offer a hand- on educational clinic for veterinary students.  Both Oregon State University and Washington State University students were scheduled to come but unfortunately the WSU were snowed out and couldn’t make it.  We ended up having 7 OSU students come as well as 10 vet tech students from PIMA (Seattle, WA).  Students were able to perform physical exams, IV injections, dental exams, dental floats and sheath cleanings on 10 horses from Save A Forgotten Equine rescue and Equine Aid rescues.  It was a full day with a few difficult horses and a good learning experience for all on the importance of sedation for equine dentistry!
Yet again, the students felt like they gained significant hands on experience at the clinic and hope to participate in more clinics in the future.  The next clinic is TBA, check out the Northwest Equine Stewardship Center website for details: www.nwesc.org.

January 2010~ Hands On Castration Clinic

The weekend of January 9-10th the HSVMA teamed up with Northwest Equine Stewardship Center in Monroe, Washington to offer a hands-on castration clinic for both Oregon State University and Washington State University veterinary students.  The 12 openings for students were quickly filled with 10 students from OSU and 2 from WSU ranging from first to third year students.  WSU graduate Dr. Kelli Taylor from Evergreen Holistic Veterinary Care and OSU graduate Dr. Matthew Wesley from Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic helped run the event by mentoring the students and supervising the procedures.  All of the horses in the clinic were seized by animal control in recent neglect/abuse cases, so the clinic not only provided hands on experience for the students, but also much needed veterinary care for the horses; a win-win situation!  In the end, students were able to perform IV catheters placement and castrations on 4 stallions, IV sedation injections and dental floats on 4 horses, and perform a lameness exam with nerve blocks on one horse.  All of the horses are doing well after their procedures, and will be ready for adoption soon; way to go students!!
The students felt like they gained significant hands on experience at the clinic and hope to participate in more clinics in the future as we put them on.  The next clinic will be Equine Dentistry in March.  Space is limited so contact Dr. Hannah Evergreen to sign up if you are interested at Hannah@evergreenholisticvet.com.   For more information you can also visit our websites at: www.hsvma.org and www.nwesc.org.

March 2009 ~ NWESC Educational Clinic and Volunteer Work Party at Save a Forgotten Equine, Monroe WA

Northwest Equine Stewardship Center held a work party at Save a Forgotten Equine recently.  A group of volunteers got together to provide professional level services to this local equine rescue. Dr. Evergreen was busy floating teeth and vaccinating horses with the help of Dr. Weeks.  Daphne was there trimming feet with the handling assistance of Valerie.  Students from PIMA were there to learn more about handling horses and assist with examinations and vaccinations.

Here is what Jaime Taft (President of S.A.F.E.) had to say about the day:

"I want to express our sincere thanks to the folks at NWESC www.nwesc.org, a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Hannah Evergreen, for the "volunteer work party" day they held to benefit SAFE yesterday!

Dr. Hannah and Dr. Weeks donated their time, as well as Daphne, Valerie, and Cindy and quite a few staff and students from PIMA Institute's vet tech program who were there to learn and get some hands on work with the horses.

Cedar, Wishes and Whisper all got dental floats, all the horses who were due for trims got their feet done, and everyone got their spring shots. Additionally, Little Miss got some chiropractic/bodywork done and Whisper got a free blood draw and lab analysis courtesy of the PIMA Institute.

THANK YOU FROM SAFE!!!! You guys are great!!! "

January 2009 ~ NWESC Educational Clinic and Volunteer Work Party at Equine Aid in Monroe, WA

Northwest Equine Stewardship Center held our very first official volunteer days at Equine Aid in Monroe WA. As one of the first official "work parties" NWESC held, we were thrilled to have such a great turnout of volunteers so willing and eager to step in and take on whatever tasks needed assistance.  Overall nine volunteers participated in the days activity, including veterinarians, a farrier, veterinary assistant, and general volunteers.  Geri Vincent and Doug Arneson, founders of Equine Aid kept the food and refreshments coming in between their own tasks, while all the volunteers teamed up to complete projects including but not limited to teeth floating, handling for hoof trimming, paddock and stall cleaning, grooming, laying stall mats, fixing barn lights, and some light riding/roundpen work for those horses in need of a little extra exercise.  One of the projects included a very intensive exam and some general education by Dr. Hannah Evergreen with a horse named "Storm" who will be homed in Bellingham with his new mom, a very excited first time horse parent.  Watching the leadership and team efforts from all the volunteers to reach one mission was nothing short of magnificent, making the day a success, and demonstrating all that Northwest Equine Stewardship Center promotes.
